Performance Team Celebrates Opening of On-terminal Transload Operations at Port of Charleston

PT125Santa Fe Springs, CA., Thursday, May 17th, 2012 – Performance Team officially welcomed customers and service partners from across the nation to its operation at the Port of Charleston’s Wando Welch Terminal.  Representatives from Positec, Belk, Northern Tool and many more were there to participate in the festivities. Cliff Katab, President of Performance Team, said, “We are honored so many of our customers came out to support the Grand Opening.”  Speakers included Jim Newsome, President of the South Carolina Ports Authority; Cliff Katab, President of Performance Team; and Diane Hartjes, Director of Private Brands from Belk.

Performance Team will be operating out of the Wando Terminal container freight station, where the company will transload cargo from ocean-going shipping container to truck for distribution to its network of customers throughout the Southeast.

“We are excited to be able to offer our customers on-port transload and distribution services.  The service will greatly improve turn times and allow their supply chain to be more flexible with increased speed,” Katab said.  “Drayage to PT’s previous inland Charleston operations was 50 miles roundtrip.  This on-port facility continues PT’s green sustainability initiatives by eliminating these drayage miles.  One of our customers currently estimates 1,800 containers for drayage and will see a savings of 90,000 miles this year alone.”

The enhanced service at Port of Charleston is particularly key since importing and exporting services are expected to grow even further in the area. The port’s deep shipping channels means they are capable of accommodating the largest vessels and can also take on the expected higher volume to come as the Panama Canal expansion is completed in 2014.

“As the premier East Coast deep water port, Charleston will be able to support all of our importers’ needs for years to come,” Katab said. “It’s a great match.”

The Wando site can handle both import and export cargo as the company continues to expand in the region and across the U.S. Transloading the goods on-site allows for greater efficiencies, reduced cost and faster speed to market for retail imports.

South Carolina Ports Authority President and CEO, Jim Newsome, praised the expansion in the Charleston region. “The on-terminal transloading service offers added value to shippers who rely on Charleston’s high productivity, proximity to population centers and extensive service network to get their product to market,” Newsome said.
