Driving for the future: FedEx points the way

Eco-drive program launched across Asia Pacific

FedEx Express, a subsidiary of FedEx Corp. (NYSE: FDX) and the world’s largest express transportation company, recently launched an Eco-drive campaign in 10 Asia-Pacific countries: Australia, China, Hong Kong, Japan, South Korea, Malaysia, New Zealand, Singapore, Taiwan and Thailand. The aim of the Eco-drive program is to improve fuel efficiency by changing the daily driving habits of hundreds of FedEx drivers.

Eco-drive teaches FedEx drivers how to operate in a more environmentally friendly way through both classroom and practical sessions. The benefits of the Eco-drive program include:

  • Fuel efficiency leading to cost savings;
  • Lower emissions leading to a cleaner environment
  • Vehicle accident prevention leading to safer roads.

The techniques and tips learned from the program can be applied on the job and outside of work. Hundreds of FedEx Asia-Pacific drivers will increase their awareness of the importance of energy conservation, environmental protection and general road safety. The program started in Japan, where it was taught by experts from Isuzu.

To help spread the Eco-drive message to the public, FedEx has released a video which shares tips with motorists on how they can drive more efficiently and reduce their environmental impact. The Eco-drive video includes tips on how accelerating gently, maintaining a constant speed and other measures can help improve a driver’s fuel efficiency. “The Eco-drive program demonstrates that it’s not just where and what FedEx team members are driving that can make a big difference in reducing fuel use, but also how they are driving,” said David L. Along with the Eco-drive program, the FedEx commitment to environmental sustainability includes shifting to more efficient vehicles and aircraft through increased investment in all-electric and alternative drive train vehicles and adding 777F aircraft to its fleet.  This fiscal year, FedEx Express is adding almost 4,000 vehicles that are at least 100% more fuel efficient than the most commonly found alternatives they replace. By the end of May 2011, the company increased its all-electric and hybrid-electric vehicle fleet by 20 percent, with more than 400 vehicles in service across the globe.  As a result, FedEx has made major progress in its commitment to improve fuel efficiency by 20% by the end of 2020. Since 2005, FedEx has reduced fuel consumption by 15.1%.
