 Lombard, Illinois USA (August 20, 2012)–The Council of Supply Chain Management Professionals (CSCMP) announced that Dr. Xiang Wan, assistant professor of supply chain management at The University of Tennessee, will receive the 2012 Dissertation Award for his research entitled, Product Variety, Service Variety, and Their Impact on Distributors. The award will be presented at the Supply Chain Management Educators’ Conference on Sunday, September 30, 2012 in Atlanta, Georgia, in conjunction with CSCMP’s Annual Global Conference.The focus of Dr. Wan’s research is the impact that product and service variety has on distributors in soft drink supply chains. Product variety has been a strategy used by many industries over the last few decades to increase sales and profits, however, few studies have been conducted to analyze its effect on distributors.
The winning paper examines the relationships between product and service variety, and distributor performance, through a series of empirical analyses. Comprised of three separate essays, Dr. Wan’s research examines the direct effect of product variety on sales and analyzes the influences of product and service variety on both demand and costs. It also explores the reverse impacts on product variety decisions. “The main purpose of my dissertation is to help practitioners solve practical supply chain management problems,” said Dr. Wan. “The soft drink industry provided an excellent forum for studying how product variety influences operational and sales performance. Although the study was based on a data sample from the soft drink supply chain, the research method, analysis procedure, and estimated results may be applied to distribution channels with large logistics networks and industries with high product variety.” Dr. Wan holds a bachelor’s degree in computer science from Nanchang University and a master’s degree in economics from Xi’an Jiaotong University in China. He received his doctorate in supply chain management from the Robert H. Smith School of Business at the University of Maryland, where he earned the Top 15% Teaching Award in 2009 and 2010, the Krowe Teaching Award in 2010, and the Allan N. Nash Award for Outstanding Doctoral Student in 2011. His research has been published in global publications such as the Journal of Operations Management, CSCMP’s Journal of Business Logistics, Transportation Research (E): Logistics and Transportation Review, Business Research, and China Market Modern Business. CSCMP’s Doctoral Dissertation Award is presented annually to the author of a submitted doctoral dissertation in a logistics- or supply chain-related field. The selected work must demonstrate significant originality and technical competence while contributing to the logistics and supply chain knowledge base.
