The new facility is designed as an “end-of-runway” operation.

DHL Supply Chain, the supply chain arm of DHL expands its operations at the European air freight hub in Leipzig/Halle, to further raise the level of its integrated European logistics services. DHL today broke the ground for a new 15,000 m2 multi-user distribution center which will take up operations in May 2012.

The new facility is designed as an “end-of-runway” operation, combining the core strengths of both DHL divisions Express and Supply Chain.

Customers mainly from the Life Sciences & Healthcare and Technology sectors will benefit from this concept which will allow for very late cut-off times, speed to market and integrated services coordination based on a direct injection into DHL’s express network. The service portfolio is also targeting clients from the Automotive and Engineering & Manufacturing industry.

Also a medical device warehouse

This new site will also act as medical device warehouse complying with the highest requirements for pharmaceuticals incl. processes, security and handling of temperature-sensitive medical products. Also, the proximity to other key European markets will allow customers in the Technology sector to offer, for example, improved repair services with a faster return and repair turnaround and integrated solutions for spare parts logistics.

DHL invests 14 million Euros into the new distribution center which will reach its final stage of expansion in 2014. The facility will then have created up to 175 new jobs.
