In a time where warehousing is evolving faster than ever, how do you stay ahead of the curve? What technologies are shaping the next generation of supply chain operations? And how do you make real progress without getting lost in the buzzwords?
In episode 61 of the Does Logistics Matter? podcast, we explore these questions and more in a deep and thought-provoking conversation with René Schrama, CCO at Peak Technologies and Phil Sambrook, EMA Transport and Logistics Vertical Lead at Zebra Technologies.
Adapting for a Faster, Smarter Future
New research from Zebra Technologies shows that we’re in the middle of a deep transformation. Their global Vision Study, drawing insights from over 1,700 logistics professionals, reveals that the way we manage warehouses is changing fast.
For decades, warehouses operated based on historical data. “This worked before, so it’ll work again.” But that model no longer holds up. From weather patterns to global pandemics, today’s variables are too complex for static systems.
That’s where AI-powered forecasting comes in. By analysing real-time data and external variables, AI enables more responsive, flexible warehouse operations. Need to adjust storage layouts for a seasonal surge? AI can recommend the most efficient configuration. Launching a new product line? AI can suggest where and how to store it for optimal throughput.
Technology That Enhances, Not Replaces
As labour shortages persist and the workforce ages, automation and robotics are stepping in to reduce physical strain and improve efficiency. From robotic picking systems to AI-driven slotting tools, the goal isn’t to remove people, it’s to empower them.
This idea of “age-friendly automation” is catching on. The message: let experienced workers do what they do best, and let tech handle the repetitive, physically demanding tasks. Smooth adoption of new technologies, however, is essential. When warehouse workers don’t accept new tech, the efficiency of the whole operation is impacted.
Cultural acceptance of automation is growing. In regions like Asia, adoption of robotics is already higher, but across Europe and the US, companies (and their workers) are catching up quickly out of necessity.
The Future Warehouse is Already Here
Warehousing used to be about stability and storage. Now, it’s about speed, intelligence, and strategic adaptability. From robotics to AI to real-time visibility, technology is changing not just what warehouses do, but how they define success.
And the most exciting part? We’re just getting started!
