Con-way Freight, the regional and national less-than-truckload (LTL) subsidiary and largest operating unit of Con-way Inc. (NYSE: CNW), announced today that Thomas W. Clark has been named executive vice president of operations.
The announcement was made by W. Gregory Lehmkuhl, who was named last week as Con-way Freight president and was the company’s previous executive vice president of operations.
Clark, a 26-year veteran of the Con-way Freight organization, becomes the company’s top operating executive, responsible for overall strategic planning and execution of Con-way Freight’s fleet and service center network operations encompassing 300 service centers and 35,000 trucks, tractors and trailers. He also is responsible for employee engagement, service quality and consistency, ongoing network analysis and process design, continuous improvement, production efficiency and customer satisfaction initiatives.
“Tom Clark has consistently and successfully taken on increasing responsibilities during his more than two decades of service with the Con-way organization,” said Lehmkuhl. “He has proven management capabilities and is a respected leader who is able to engage employees with credibility and drive results.”
“His dedication to learning and teaching Lean principles has been impressive,” Lehmkuhl continued, “and his project leadership skills have been critical to the success of major initiatives over the past two years that have been at the forefront of our improvement. I look forward to his continued contributions.”
Clark was most recently vice president of operations, eastern area for Con-way Freight, a positioned he assumed in June 2005. He previously served as a region manager for Con-way’s New England and Florida regions, and as service center manager in Atlanta and Norcross, Ga. Prior to joining Con-way he held freight operations positions for a Southern U.S. motor carrier.
Clark is a graduate of Con-way’s Advanced Leadership Preparation for Highest Achievement (ALPHA) program and has been twice honored for his leadership by the company’s employee recognition program.
He graduated from Albany University, Albany, N.Y., earning a bachelor of arts degree in rhetoric and communication.
Clark is based at Con-way Freight’s headquarters in Ann Arbor, Mich.
