- Control tower operation to oversee the movement of up to two million bakery products daily
- Environmental and operational efficiencies to be generated through improved planning and visibility, reducing annual mileage by two million miles
London, 05/01/2012, 10:30 AM CEST – Through more effective centralised planning and the implementation of DHL’s dedicated Pluto planning tool more than two million miles of transportation will be avoided per annum.
DHL Supply Chain has been awarded a five-year contract with the UK’s leading baker, Warburtons. As Lead Logistics Provider, DHL will implement a control tower operation to manage the baker’s primary logistics, facilitating increased visibility across its supply chain, and driving efficiency.
Through more effective centralised planning and the implementation of DHL’s dedicated Pluto planning tool, which enhances visibility of the supply chain, more than two million miles of transportation will be avoided per annum. Similarly, fuel efficiency and carbon output will be monitored through new technologies across the fleet, helping to drive productivity. Telematic devices will be used to measure driver and vehicle performance, which will facilitate targeted training in improved driving techniques.

Control tower operation to oversee the movement of the bakery products
The collaborative control tower operation, based at Warburtons’ site in Bolton, will oversee the primary transport of up to two million bread loaves, rolls, crumpets and other bakery products daily between Warburtons’ 12 bakeries and 13 depots across the UK.
DHL will be staffing the control tower with a team of experienced planners and process improvement designers to provide agility and responsiveness in the planning process.
Adam Marson, Supply Chain Director at Warburtons, commented: “DHL’s proven experience in the cereal sector made it a natural choice as our logistics partner. Its transparent, measurable initiatives will have a pivotal role in supporting our ability to continue delivering the freshest products possible daily to our customers and consumers.”
Roly Taplin, Vice President, Agri-food at DHL Supply Chain commented: “Warburtons is deservedly proud of its tradition and quality – attributes which are also ingrained throughout DHL’s operations. We’re delighted to have been selected as a strategic partner to Warburtons, and look forward to helping meet its strategic operating objectives while continuing to deliver vertically integrated supply chain solutions to the cereals and bread industry.”
