$50,000 gift from Con-way Charitable Foundation is organization’s first donation; employee drive raises additional $14,000 to support Oklahoma Tornado Relief
ANN ARBOR, Mich. – August 27, 2013 – The American Red Cross received a total gift of nearly $64,000 representing a $50,000 donation from the Con-way Charitable Foundation, and an additional $14,000 in personal donations from Con-way employees, who rallied around the nation to spearhead local outreach and fund-raising drives to help the tornado victims in Moore, Oklahoma.
The Oklahoma tornado response has spanned multiple communities over the past three months and involved more than 2,000 Red Cross workers. To date, the Red Cross has:
- Served nearly 460,000 meals and snacks.
- Distributed over 400,000 relief items like sunscreen, ice chests, buckets, gloves, dust masks, flashlights, tarps, shovels and rakes.
- Provided about 24,000 health services and mental health contacts.
- Provided 6,300 overnight stays in disaster shelters.
Each year, the American Red Cross responds to about 70,000 natural and other disasters in the U.S., ranging from fires to hurricanes, floods, earthquakes, tornadoes, hazardous materials spills, transportation accidents and explosions.
Victims count on the Red Cross to help in their darkest hour. In turn, the support of donors makes it possible for the Red Cross to fulfill its humanitarian mission.
“Con-way is a long-time supporter of the American Red Cross,” says Douglas W. Stotlar, president and CEO at Con-way Inc. “We are pleased to have the Con-way Charitable Foundation’s inaugural contribution go to the Red Cross for disaster relief and recovery for those affected by the devastating tornado that struck Moore, Oklahoma. The care, shelter, supplies and hope provided by the Red Cross is critical to helping disaster-torn communities recover. It’s a mission we remain proud to support.”
“The Red Cross is extremely grateful to the Con-way Charitable Foundation,” says Donna Duvin, Chief Executive Officer for the Washtenaw-Lenawee Chapter. “Because of the Foundation’s support and the generosity of Con-way employees, the Red Cross is empowered to respond to disasters when they occur, here in our backyard or across the country” says Duvin.
