With Input from Drivers, Con-way Truckload Purchases 525 New Tractors

Over 200 Drivers Weigh in, Select Kenworth T680, Praise Navistar ProStar

CON-WAY125JOPLIN, Mo. – May 29, 2013 – Con-way Truckload, a full truckload carrier and subsidiary of Con-way Inc. (NYSE:CNW), today announced the purchase of 525 new tractors in a replacement cycle that will maintain the company’s 2,700-tractor fleet as one of the youngest and most modern in the truckload market.

In its evaluation of equipment options, the company engaged its driver workforce to provide input and feedback on different manufacturers and models. Manufacturers were invited to stage trucks at the company’s five terminals nationwide. Over 200 drivers participated in the product review and surveys, and the majority selected the Kenworth T680 model. They applauded the design, interior, comfort, headroom and increased width in the bunk.

The addition of the 2014 Navistar ProStar was based upon positive feedback from drivers on the cab comfort and interior of the fleet’s existing 2013 models.

“Drivers are going to choose a carrier that respects them. One of the many ways Con-way Truckload shows that is to actively seek our drivers’ opinions on a variety of issues, and then act upon their feedback,” said Randy Cornell, vice president of maintenance and asset management for Con-way Truckload. “Further, we want to ensure our professional drivers are behind the wheel of the best equipment available.”

Con-way’s existing fleet consisted of predominately Kenworth T660s and Navistar ProStars with other makes from Freightliner, Peterbilt, Volvo and Navistar. This purchase of 525 new tractors (325 Kenworth T680s and 200 Navistar ProStars) will allow for the retiring of the same number of tractors approaching 500,000 miles in service, which is the typical turn-in mileage for units in Con-way Truckload’s fleet.

“Con-way puts their money where their mouth is when it comes to driver safety and comfort,” said John Kelly, a professional driver with Con-way Truckload. “With this new equipment, I’ll not only have a comfortable and reliable tractor, but I can also make my fellow truckers jealous when we see each other on the highway.”

The new units are being delivered throughout the year, with the 525th scheduled to be on the road by December.
