Depot offers 250 jobs in the region
21 May 2012 at 10:45 CET – Hoofddorp – PostNL Parcels has opened a new depot in Den Bosch, offering 250 jobs in the region, over 50 of which are for people distant from the labour market. Den Bosch is the fourth depot to open as part of a new logistics infrastructure being set up by PostNL’s parcel division.
Parcel volumes have risen sharply in recent years, partly due to strong growth in e-commerce. To answer to the increasing volume increases and to modernise the logistics infrastructure the 4 current sorting centres and 37 distribution centres are being replaced by 18 depots, where both sorting and distribution take place. The infrastructure for parcels is separate from that of mail. A total of EUR 240 million is being invested in the new logistics infrastructure. The aim is to have all new sites in operation by 2015, providing PostNL with a scalable logistics network that can handle 140 million parcels. The people employed in the current logistics network will transfer to the new infrastructure.
New sites have already opened in Utrecht, Elst and Waddinxveen, and over the next few years PostNL will open 14 such sites across the Netherlands. The newly adapted process will enable the company to better meet the rapidly changing needs of both senders and receivers. Senders want to grow, and receivers want more choice and control when it comes to the delivery of the goods they have ordered. Numerous environmental measures have been implemented in the new sites resulting in lower CO2 emissions.
Six days a week the Weener Groep, a job centre run by Den Bosch city council, will be staffing the morning shift with around 30 employees from a pool of 60 people who are distant from the labour market. In the evening the new depot will provide work for 45 local people, with the aim of employing over 20 who are distant from the labour market. The new depot also offers employment to some 15 administrative staff and an average of 130 parcel drivers.
Gerrit Mastenbroek, Managing Director of PostNL Parcels says: “We are delighted with the launch of our fourth ‘new-style’ depot. The capacity of this depot is essential if we are to meet the ever-increasing demand for parcel delivery and to improve the already excellent quality. Last year, Dutch consumers placed more than 77 million orders online, worth almost EUR 9 billion. The new logistics infrastructure offers us and our customers a host of benefits when it comes to time, quality and efficiency. It enables them to use services like Checkpay, PostNL Checkout and Pakjegemak, all of which help meet their urgent needs and wishes: order it today, get it delivered tomorrow.”
