Keystone Distribution UK (www.keystone-distribution.co.uk) and McDonald’s UK (www.mcdonalds.co.uk) have been named as the winners of the 2011 Environmental Improvement Award at this year’s Chartered Institute for Logistics and Transport (CILT) Awards for Excellence.

Keystone and McDonald’s received the prestigious accolade for a joint entry focusing on OSCAR, their innovative and industry leading reverse logistics used cooking oil (UCO) solution which has significantly reduced distribution carbon emissions. The award was presented at a gala dinner held at the London Marriott Hotel, Grosvenor Square.

Entrants, including DHL Supply Chain with BAA and Ceva with B&Q, were judged on a range of criteria including reduction in emissions (including disposal methods), improved sustainability of products or operations, reduction in packaging or other waste (including recycling) and staff involvement in improvement programmes.

Commenting on the award, the lead judge in the CILT (UK) Annual Awards for Excellence – Environmental Improvement Category, said: “We (The CILT ) were pleased to give this award to Keystone and McDonald’s this year because their entry showed the best evidence of many of the things we are looking for:

–       An elegant approach to reverse logistics to make better use of existing plant.

–       Creativity and determination in addressing practical problems.

–       Good training, support and management commitment to make the solutions work.

–       Proven benefits – all claims backed up by robust KPI’s.”

Chris Yong, Senior Supply Chain Manager, McDonald’s UK, commented: ”Receiving an award is always a great achievement but this one is particularly fulfilling as it recognises not only the innovation and strength of the OSCAR solution and the significant environmental benefits that it delivers, but also the fantastic partnership between McDonald’s and Keystone Distribution.”

Bryan Jones, Managing Director, Keystone Distribution UK, added: “Winning this prestigious award is a truly great testament to the success of our collaborative relationship with McDonald’s UK. This

recognition raises our profile in the UK supply chain industry and publicly reinforces our CSR agenda and our long-term commitment to pursuing environmentally sustainable logistics solutions.”
