Drivers Join “America’s Road Team” as national ambassadors promoting professionalism, industry message of safe driving, highway awareness and sharing the road safely

CON-WAY125ANN ARBOR, Mich. – January 24, 2013 – Con-way Inc. announced today that four of its drivers have been selected as Captains of the America’s Road Team (ART) by American Trucking Associations (ATA). Captains serve for 2-year terms as industry safety ambassadors, representing America’s 3.4 million professional truck drivers and serving as a rallying point for the spirit of professional dedication and teamwork needed to deliver America’s freight safely and on time.

The Con-way drivers were among 16 professional truck drivers selected as 2013-2014 Road Team Captains. They will serve on a rotating basis traveling around the country speaking to various schools, community and industry groups promoting highway safety, safe driving skills and the critical role that trucking plays in the nation’s economy. The four Con-way professional truck drivers named to this year’s America’s Road Team are:

  • Jeffrey Halford, Driver Sales Representative, Con-way Freight, Meridian, ID
  • Rod Miles, Driver Sales Representative, Con-way Freight, Lauderhill, FL
  • Brian Wold, Driver Sales Representative, Con-way Freight, Fargo, ND
  • Stephanie Klang, Professional Driver, Con-way Truckload, Diamond, MO

Ms. Klang is the first driver in Con-way Truckload’s 51-year history to be named to the America’s Road Team, and becomes the first woman Captain on the team since 2006. Messrs. Halford, Miles and Wold join a contingent 21 other Con-way Freight drivers who previously served as Road Team Captains since the program was founded in 1986.

“Road Team Captains play a special role for our industry as safety ambassadors, bringing an important message of professionalism and safety. I’m proud our drivers will serve as role models, exemplifying the best our industry has to offer, “said Douglas W. Stotlar, president and chief executive officer, Con-way Inc.

The 16 Captains were selected from a finalist group of 32 candidates, which was drawn from an initial application pool of over 2,000 professional truck drivers. Road Team Captains exemplify the best of professional truck drivers who have an excellent safety record and demonstrate an ability to communicate his or her commitment to safety and passion for the industry. Nominees also portray a positive image of the professional truck driver in all that they do.

America’s Road Team is a national public outreach program led by a small group of professional truck drivers who share superior driving skills, remarkable safety records and a strong desire to communicate highway safety. American Trucking Associations, the voice of the trucking industry, created America’s Road Team in 1986 to reach out to the trucking industry and the motoring public.
