Con-way Truckload Announces July 2011 Drivers of the Month

Drivers Recognized for Outstanding Effort and Dedication and Reaching Career Milestones

JOPLIN, Mo – September 21, 2011

Con-way Truckload, a full truckload carrier and subsidiary of Con-way Inc. (NYSE: CNW), today announced the six winners of its Drivers of the Month recognition for July. The company is also honoring six drivers who have successfully reached one million miles.

“These exceptional drivers demonstrate the utmost in professionalism every day, and they are truly deserving of this honor for their hard work,” said Saul Gonzalez, chief operating officer, Con-way Truckload. “We thank them for their superior performance and congratulate them on these significant accomplishments.”

The following drivers were recognized by the company:

  • Company Driver of the Month: Tim Hicks became a professional truck driver after leaving the Air Force in 1992. He had always loved to travel and knew that a career in the industry would afford him the opportunity to see different parts of the country. He credits his success as a driver to slowing down and focusing on the road. When he’s not driving, Tim enjoys spending time with his family and watching NASCAR and drag racing. He resides in Laredo, Texas, with his wife Betsy and three children, Morgan, Kayla and Cameron.
  • Company Team of the Month: Thomas and Joan Walter have been truck drivers for 40 and 20 years, respectively. Thomas followed in his father’s footsteps, while Joan began her driving career as a bus driver. Together they enjoy seeing different parts of the country and being out on the open road. They believe the key to staying safe is paying close attention to their surroundings and the cars that share the highways with them. Residents of Madison, N.C., Thomas enjoys drag racing in his spare time, while Joan likes to work in her yard and flower garden. Together they have six children and seven grandchildren.
  • Owner-Operator Driver of the Month: William Coffman started driving professionally in 1973 and joined Con-way Truckload in 1999. Truck driving was something William had always wanted to pursue given the new experiences and freedom that life on the road brings. His advice to fellow drivers is to take their time, pay attention, follow the Smith System of safe driving principles and control their speed, particularly in inclement weather. William resides in Stockbridge, Ga., with his wife, Nancy. The couple has four children and five grandchildren. When not behind the wheel, William likes to fish.
  • Owner-Operator Team of the Month: Gary and Nora Bulen stay focused on what they can control as professional truck drivers—their truck, speed, fuel mileage and idle time—to stay safe, protect the environment and deliver superior service to customers. Gary began driving in 1974, joining Con-way Truckload in 1991. He loves the challenges that each day brings with changing weather, traffic conditions and terrain. Nora started driving in 1995, joining Con-way Truckload in 1996, and loves the financial freedom her career brings. The Bulens reside in Monkey Island, Okla., and enjoy boating, jet skiing, fishing, working around the yard and hosting summer barbecues.

Six drivers have achieved one million miles of driving this month, including Juan Curioso of Tampa, Fla.; Marcus Statton of Phillipsburg, Mo.; Michael Hunt of Purmela, Texas; Michael Richey of Yuma, Ariz.; Saul Parra of Canyon Lake, Texas; Stephen Donoway of Girdle Tree, Md.; and Willie Nowden of El Paso, Texas.
