Eco-friendly building shows long-term commitment to London Heathrow (London Heathrow, 8th October 2012) Schenker Limited, the UK arm of the global services provider DB Schenker Logistics, formally opened their new headquarters building today at London Heathrow. Board members, customers, key suppliers and a team from SEGRO, Europe’s leading developer and owner of industrial space joined the DB Schenker team to celebrate the completion of the 9,900 square meter facility, which will also be the main airfreight hub for the UK.
“The facility is perfectly located for access to all areas of the airport and our 15 year lease, shows real commitment to London Heathrow”, says Helgi Ingolfsson, Managing Director, Schenker Limited.
The new corporate office is constructed as a ‘green building’, which is designed to achieve 25 percent lower CO2 emissions than the standard and also features low and zero carbon air source heat pumps which service both office comfort cooling and warehouse under-floor heating. There is also rainwater harvesting, a heat recovery ventilation system and both PIR (passive infrared) and photoelectric lighting controls. This means less emission of carbon dioxide and thus will contribute to the group’s sustainability strategy DB 2020. DB Schenker intends to cut the specific CO2 emissions by 20 percent over 2006 levels by 2020. 95 percent of concrete was recycled from the original site, the building has also been awarded a BREEAM rating of Excellent (BRE Environmental Assessment Method).
“What we wanted was to make DB Schenker, Heathrow a very modern facility that is ‘The place to work’ at London Heathrow, a great environment for our people to work in. Beyond we wanted an eco-friendly facility to handle our airfreight customers cargo in, both now and in the future, I think we have achieved that”, Helgi Ingolfsson says.
Commenting on the new building, Andy Gulliford, SEGRO’s Chief Operating Officer said, “We are delighted to have completed DB Schenker’s new facility at Heathrow. The new and highly sustainable facility will now become the main Air Freight hub for DB Schenker in the UK. It’s great for SEGRO and Heathrow to welcome a major new customer and we are very proud to be associated with such a significant development.”
