Alumar, one of the largest global producers of alumina and primary aluminum, is a consortium formed of Alcoa, RioTintoAlcan and BHP Billiton. The EHS Marathon was created by the consortium to ensure that all service providers that operate in the complex in Sao Luiz, North Brazil, take a proactive and preventative approach to health and safety, decreasing the risk of accidents.
“We are very proud of this accomplishment, which is a result of the commitment of our employees working on this contract, and of an efficient safety and health management system,” says Milton Pimenta, Operations Director of CEVA in Brazil.
CEVA’s health and safety program at the site is based on the three pillars of leadership, prevention and performance. This approach means that preventative safety measures and training are implemented at all levels of the operation and ensures individual accountability for the prevention of accidents.
In addition to CEVA, 20 companies participated in the event and were evaluated across several areas, including improved health and safety performance and Environment Health and Safety (EHS) technology transfer, as well as ensuring the participation and support of this program by senior management of all companies operating within the complex.
